To support our next phase of growth we are opening a new Research & Development operation, Jonas Software Solutions, in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

We are now looking to recruit our first wave of Developers, QA Analysts, Designers, DBAs, Product Owners, and other key individuals with all levels of experience to form an integral part of the Jonas business across North America.

Database Administrator

The Database Administrator will be responsible for the implementation, configuration, maintenance, and performance of critical SQL Server RDBMS systems, to ensure the availability and consistent performance of our customer-facing applications. This is a “hands-on” position requiring solid technical skills, as well as excellent interpersonal and communication skills. We will look to you to create customer-focused solutions, and deliver optimized solutions for application performance. This role includes participating in an on-call rotation, as well as occasional after-hours support.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the ongoing maintenance and support of an existing on-premises Microsoft SQL Server Enterprise environment, including SQL replication services, storage management, patching, and general database maintenance. They will also lead the data migration to an AWS cloud-based database engine environment. They will have the opportunity to design the new database solution utilizing cloud-native AWS RDS database engines, as well as be a major contributor to our database warehouse and business intelligence (BI) projects. Must be capable of working independently and collaboratively.

Job Responsibilities:

Manage and maintain multiple Microsoft SQL Server databases in multiple product lifecycle environments, including Development, QA, On-Boarding, and Production.

Manage and maintain SQL Server database replication to multiple subscribers.

Tune and define maintenance jobs to ensure high levels of performance, stability, and availability, as well as conformance to documented best practices.

Ensure system integrity through the use of both native and third-party monitoring tools.

Maintain data integrity, security, and emergency recovery procedures.

Perform 2nd level database support for external end-users as well as internal technical teams.

Resolve moderately complex technical problems.

Independently analyze, solve, and correct issues in real-time.

Refine and automate regular processes, track issues, and document changes.

Perform scheduled maintenance and support release deployment activities after hours.

Monitor necessary system backups.

Participate in the On-call Support rotation.

Job Qualifications:

Bachelor-Level degree in a technical field (MIS, CS, Engineering, etc), or 4 years of additional experience.

3+ years of Microsoft SQL Server database administration experience in a mixed virtual and physical systems environment.

Experience with Performance Tuning and Optimization (PTO), using native monitoring and troubleshooting tools.

Experience with SQL Server database replication.

Experience with backups, restores, and recovery models.

Knowledge of High Availability (HA) and Disaster Recovery (DR) options for SQL Server.

Advanced analytical and organizational skills.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Ability to multi-task and context-switch effectively between different activities and teams.

Must be flexible and willing to work rotating on-call shifts as assigned.

Must be available to provide scheduled services during the evening and overnight hours, as necessary.

Ability to travel 1-2 times a year to the US

Skills and Knowledge Preferred:

Experience with SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS)

Experience with SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS)

Experience with SQL Server database replication

Experience with Postgres and AWS RDS Databases Engines

High Availability / Disaster Recovery / Availability Groups

Data Warehousing / Business Intelligence Experience

Understand Parquet data format, and data lake formation

Technical writing skills beneficial
