ABOUT THE ROLE
TransAlta is currently looking to fill a full-time position as Market Analyst, East within the Energy Marketing & Trading team. The successful candidate will report to the Supervisor, East Portfolio and will be a part of the team of analysts that support the entire Eastern Trading Desk.
Fundamental knowledge of and experience with eastern Canadian and US power and gas markets
An analytical approach to problem solving and quantitative modeling skills
A strong technical skillset
This position will appeal to an individual who is comfortable in a fast-paced team environment and is interested in contributing to achieving business results in a rapidly changing and challenging area of the energy business.
Develop and maintain analytical tools used for short- and medium-term price forecasting and sensitivity analysis
Gather and interpret quantitative and qualitative eastern market intelligence that affects spot power prices such as market rule or regulatory changes, supply, demand, and other market drivers
Use electricity and natural gas market knowledge to create trading strategies for proprietary trading
Ability to quickly assess changing market dynamics; provide market assessments of risks and opportunities; and, articulate views to traders
Degree in Economics, Engineering, Finance, Computer Science, or a related field. Preference will be given to candidates with an advanced degree in any of these fields
Minimum of 2 years of related business experience. Preference will be given to candidates with direct experience in the power and/or natural gas markets
Demonstrated competence with statistical tools and methods, as well as programming skill is desired; for example Python, SQL, Excel VBA, R, or MATLAB
Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with teammates and customers
Demonstrated ability to effectively make educated decisions under pressure
