Reporting to the Pathology Technician II / Medical Laboratory Technologist ll and lll, Pathology Scientist, Supervisor or Manager, this position provides assistance to Pathologists in performing necropsy and gross tissue examination. The Pathology Technician I is directly responsible to pathologists for the quality of their work and will work in close collaboration with and under the guidance of pathologist medical staff in all matters relating to tissue examination. Gross Examination and Sampling of Surgical Specimens: Prepare and perform gross surgical specimen dissection according to standard operating procedures (SOPs) up to and including level VI. Confirm pertinent and appropriate clinical information.
Prepare frozen tissue sections under direction of staff Pathologists and performs cryotomy when required. Responsible for tumor banking and ancillary testing and/or other procedures under general direction of staff Pathologists. Organize and maintain specimens as per retention guidelines. Operate, maintain and perform basic troubleshooting of all instruments, equipment and procedures including the imaging and mapping of tissue specimens. Autopsy Service at FMC and ACH Only: Perform post-mortem eviscerations to include central nervous system with minimum supervision. Carry out gross dissection of major organ systems at autopsy under the supervision of staff Pathologists. Select appropriate autopsy tissue for ancillary testing and/or other procedures under general direction of staff Pathologists. Prepare decedent for viewing. Maintain, clean, decontaminate and organize work areas based on LEAN Six Sigma principles and established SOPs. Liaison with AHS staff to ensure accuracy of required documentation. Coordinate with the Medical Examiner’s medical laboratory as needed. Participate in training new staff and students. Perform other related duties as required.

Canadian Certification Council of Pathologists' Assistants (CCCPA) Certification.
Additional Required Qualifications:
Intermediate knowledge of Anatomy and Physiology and medical terminology. Any Canadian equivalency to English 30 or 33 or CLBA score of Benchmark 8, completed within the last 6 months. Able to work with and exposure to chemicals and gloves. Able to work with deceased patients. Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication skills. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely to explain information in a well thought out, logical and effective manner.
Completion of an accredited Pathologists’ Assistant program. ASCP-PA Certification. Related experience in Anatomic Pathology within the last 3 years. Basic LIS and Microsoft computer skills. Basic understanding of CPSA Accreditation requirements. Competence in grossing surgical specimens up to Level VI. Competence in autopsy evisceration including central nervous system (FMC only).
